The HK Prize is One of the Most prestigious Awards in Hong Kong

HK prize is one of the most prestigious awards in Hong Kong. It is awarded to the best graduate students in History who have excelled in their studies, and whose research work shows a high level of intellectual independence and creativity. The winner of this prestigious award will receive a cash prize of $5,000. The award is given once a year to one student who achieves the highest overall performance in courses related to the study of Chinese History from 1840 until present day, including the history of Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.

The first prize is given for research papers dealing with the development of the economy, politics and society of Hong Kong or its relations to China, Asia and beyond. The second prize is for an outstanding essay on any aspect of Hong Kong history and culture written by a postgraduate student in the field of Hong Kong Studies. The essay should be submitted in English.

An independent panel will select the winning entries, and the winner will be notified by post within two weeks after the competition closes. The winning essay will be published in the IBP 2023 book, Global Hong Kong Studies. The prize is named in memory of George B. Endacott, a distinguished historian of the History Department at HKU who was instrumental in the re-establishment of the Department following World War II and who established Hong Kong Studies as a respectable field of scholarship.

In addition to the main prize, there are seven secondary prizes. In each category, the best paper will be presented with a plaque and a certificate. The best paper in the History of Hong Kong will be awarded a prize of $5,000, while the other six secondary prizes will be worth $1,000 each.

The HK Prize is also supported by local and international businesses. The Hong Kong Tourism Board is a major sponsor and is the organizer of the competition. The judging panel is comprised of industry professionals from both the public and private sectors.
